Research into Practice – Week 4

Suzie Hanna gave a seminar on context and characterisation which highlighted the difference between practice-based research and practice-led research. Practice-based leading to a creative artifact adding to the sum of knowledge while practice-led leading to new understandings about the practice itself. Although this sounds like semantics more than anything else to the untrained ear, it is almost the difference between looking outward and looking in, both of which are surely necessary. My own practice is at such an embryonic stage that I have difficulty placing in within a meaningful context, other than the vague touchstone of ‘experimental film’. Perhaps that’s enough for now…
